Greeni-Colada

This is Bradley Marsh, Debbie’s son, who was bored and decided to add a new raw smoothie to the current plethora. She was making her usually green smoothie before dinner and I thought… why not make this interesting? In addition to the greens, I had us add a high amount of frozen fruits and berries; an ingredient not often used in Debbie’s smoothies that is actually a key ingredient here is the açaí. The açaí balances the sweet and sour of the fruits with the bitter or bland greens to get a nice piña colada flavor. Sure, there’s pineapple already in it, but the açaí enhances it so the greens don’t cover up the pineapple entirely.

Due to it being unfamiliar on this particular site, I am going to discuss the brief history of açaí and its common health benefits. Açaí originates from Brazil and grows from palms by the rivers. In berry form, the oils can be used to treat diarrhea and skin ulcers, while the berry itself can be crushed to treat fevers. As for the liquid, it is commonly referred to as the purple juice extracted from the thin outer shell which is soaked soft to allow for the juice to easily strain. Açaí is known as the superior of all other fruits and berries because of its massive amount of B vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-9 fatty acids. The minerals found in açaí include an abundance in potassium, copper, and manganese; açaí is so nutritional that less than a serving can feed your body of the majority of required daily intake of nutrients. Açaí also contains a high concentration of antioxidants. The scientific ORAC scale shows that açaí ranks above the blueberry, blackberry, and cranberry as far as the neutralization of free radicals goes. It has been proven that the divine fruit heals and prevents potential metabolic related diseases and cancers.

As you may have already noticed, I am a fan of the açaí berry and juice. In my personal life it has helped me overcome cravings and weight gain. The berry, at least in my opinion, has a very unique and flavorful taste that allows me to take but one small spoonful and feel satisfied; a little goes a long way.

Now for what you’ve been waiting for… the recipe to the Greeni-Colada!

Super Mocha Berry Smoothie

Well, it’s been a while since I posted a recipe. So, I thought I start by adding another super smoothie to the mix. I absolutely love smoothies, and  especially smoothies made with super foods!

This smoothie does have a lot of different super foods included. If you don’t have them all, don’t worry about it – just make it with what you can. However, if you ever get the chance, do try it with all the super foods included here.

One of the super foods included in this recipes besides cacao, and berries, is raw maca root powder. Maca is an incredible super food that grows at very high altitudes, in the high Andean plateaus of Peru. It is considered a tuber root and is related to the potato.

Maca is a healing food. It works to repair the body as needed so that the body can operate at an optimal level of health, while maintaining energy levels at all times. Maca is also great for libido in both men and women, and helps to regulate the hormones – Nature’s natural and best “mojo helper” available! It has also been linked to helping with fertility.

Maca is great for relieving depression, and stabilizing mood. It’s a “feel good” food. The flavor is quite distinct, and resembles that of carmel-like yams. Maca is a nutrient-dense food, making it a super food, and is great in smoothies, raw desserts, yogurt, and more.

Some of my favorite brands of raw maca powder are Navitas Naturals, Raw Food World, and Elements for Life.

For the mocha-coffee flavoring in this smoothie, I prepared some fresh and delicious, caffeine free, non acidic, Teeccino Mocha. It’s organic, and is prebiotic too, made with inulin from chicory root. Teeccino is not coffee at all. It is a special blend of organic barley, chicory, dates, almonds, figs, carob, and cacao – and it’s simply wonderful!

Well, now for the recipe. Enjoy! =)

Ingredients:
1 scoop Chocolate Green Superfood (Amazing Grass)
1 T raw cacao nibs
1 T raw maca root powder
1 T raw carob powder
1/4 c raw cacao powder
1 tsp raw camu camu powder
1 1/2 tsp raw mesquite powder
1 1/2 tsp raw lucuma powder
1 tsp raw vanilla bean powder
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 T hemp seeds
1/2 T bee pollen
1/4 cup prepared Mocha Teeccino
1 T raw almond butter or coconut butter
1 T raw honey or agave nectar
4-6 drops chocolate flavored SweetLeaf Liquid Stevia
1/2 cup blueberries (frozen)
1/4 cup pineapple chunks (frozen)
2 small to med. bananas
coconut water (enough to cover more than half the blender)
water and ice as needed for thickness and coldness

Preparation:
Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and mix on high until super smooth, thick, cold and YUMMO!!! Drink this for breakfast, lunch or a snack. It’s super energizing, super nutritious, and super delicious too!

Regarding super foods, today I read a great article on Lovingraw.com by Gabrielle Brick, entitled “What Is A Superfood?” Check it out.

Today’s post is an original raw superfoods recipe from fellow Superhero Lenette, out of Chicago, Ill.

This is a super delicious recipe for raw ice cream, using my favorite superfoods cacao and maca! Be sure to watch the video too!

(I tried several times to embed the video here, like I have done in the past, but had no success. Please use this link to view the video from Lenette!).

Ingredients:
3 frozen bananas
6 pitted medjool dates
3T raw tahini
2T maca powder
3T cacao powder
coconut water with a couple of drops of Marine Phytoplankton (add to mix as needed to blend)
5 ice cubes purified water (add more if needed to blend and mix to desired consistency)

Preparation:
Add all ingredients into a high-speed blender (preferably a Vita-Mix blender). Add coconut water slowly, and ice slowly until well combined, smooth and creamy like ice-cream. Serve-up right away (if cold enough), or place in a container and freeze.

Thanks Lenette – this was an awesome recipe!!! 🙂

Spicy Mayan Cacao Squares

I absolutely love the Mayan Spice Wild Bars, and have been wanting to come up with my own version of this tasty bar. So, I came up with this delicious and energizing candy square that I think you will absolutely love! Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 cup raw almonds
1 cup raw macadamia nuts
1 cup raw cacao powder
1/2 cup raw cacao butter (melted)
1/2 cup raw cacao nibs
1/4 cup mesquite powder
2T blue green algae
4T maca powder
1/4 cup agave nectar
1 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan salt
1/2 tsp raw vanilla bean powder
1 tsp ground cayenne
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp hemp seed
1/2 tsp trace minerals (gold)
6 pitted dates

Preparation:
Grind almonds and macadamia nuts in a food processor until almost a powder. Add all ingredients except for cacao butter, agave, and dates. Blend until well combine. Add cacao butter and agave, and mix very well. Finally, add dates and mix until mixture is completely broken down and combined. It should look chocolaty, gooey, and gritty. Remove from food processor and scoop into candy or brownie type molds. Place in freezer for about 1-2 hours. Remove and serve. They can be stored in the freezer (for several weeks or more) or refrigerator (for about two weeks maybe more) in an air-tight container.

Cacao-Carob Super-Charged Cookie Balls

I just want to apologize for the delay in posting a new recipe this week. I originally was planning to post a delicious super-charged, chocolaty smoothie on Sunday, but was temporarily “banned” from posting on my blog. Since I didn’t bother to write the smoothie recipe down anywhere, I lost it somewhere in my brain. Maybe I’ll remember at another time. Oh well.

The recipe I have for you today is super-charged as well! It’s packed with superfoods, super flavor, and super energy! Be careful not to eat too much at once, you could end up flying around the room like a superhero – not kidding! Lol…

I made such a big batch of these cookie balls, but they were gone in two days. I did share them with friends, and so did my husband…I’ll have to make more! Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 cup raw almonds (not soaked)
1 cup raw walnuts
1/2 cup goji berries
1/2 cup raw cacao nibs
2T raw carob powder
1T raw mesquite powder
2 tsp raw vanilla powder
1 tsp cordyceps mushrooms
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1T bee pollen
1T raw hemp seed
1/2 cup organic dried coconut flakes
1 1/2 cup pitted dates (well packed)
2 drizzles raw agave nectar
1T raw almond butter

Preparation:
Start by combining the nuts, cacao nibs, and goji berries together in a food processor, and mix until crumbly. Add remaining ingredients except for the dates. Mix until crumbly and well combined. Finally add the dates. Mix again until dates are broken down, combined well, and mixture starts to form a sticky, crumbly dough consistency. Remove from food processor. Using a cookie scoop or big spoon, take scoops of dough and shape in between your hands to form a ball shaped cookie. You can flatten them too, if desired. Store cookie balls in an air tight container. They don’t have to be refrigerated, but refrigeration will extend the freshness. These cookies are super-packed with power, so careful not to over-indulge…you’ll be flying high and feeling fine!
